Science Fiction

Arena by John Irvine - They hadn't warned me sufficiently about the noise or the dust or the stench. Holy Mother-in-law of God! The smell!

The Last Adam by Gareth D Jones - The last man on earth worked in heart-broken silence, carving a name onto a wooden plaque with meticulous care.

Star Dream by Peggy Le Johnson - Hoping I don't wake up the old man I slide from the bed as gently as I can, he doesn't move. The flashlight is lying there on the kitchen counter so I head out the back door. The moon is hidden behind a cloud, but I can still see its fullness in light all about me. Off to the east the sky seems to glow as if the woods are afire. The dogs keep up their barking. No amount of scolding can get them to quiet down. I have no idea why he isn't up, this should be the mans work, I think to myself.

Fantasy

Born Again by Ricky Ginsburg - Ryan Andrew McDonough got his soul at 3:19 on the morning of February 28, 2004. For eight months, and twenty-six days he floated, alive, kicking, and demanding three squares daily through his mother's placenta. There was no happy or sad; the only thoughts coursing through his partially developed brain were the primitive tools we all start with, the simple needs of sustaining life.

FIONA AND THE CRANES by Tala Bar - "Fiona, customer!" George's loud whisper woke Fiona from her reverie, and she turned to talk to a small man, shorter than her own tall figure, who looked at her under his bald head with large, kind eyes.

Rescue by Jamie K. Schmidt - Sy paced the dungeon cell and kicked the straw pallet in frustration. He was the High Prince Syvolle Des Rhaschine and he was a prisoner. He crouched down and ran his fingers over the squalid stone floor, cursing his luck. It was all her fault.

Short

Ponk's Inheritance by P.H. Madore - After the day's work was done, Herbert sat in his living-room easy chair, exhausted. Sweat coursed down his face; he looked as though his head would burst. He'd always worked in frenzy, rarely stopping even for hydration.
